Causes
The cause of Biliary Atresia is still not determined however doctors have come up with multiple theories that have yet to be proven. One of the causes that have been ruled out is inheritance. Second, this disease is not contagious. Therefore, most likely a situation happened inside the womb or the around the time of birth. The following are other possible scenarios, which may have led to the development of Biliary Atresia, are:
1. A permanent genetic mutation in the infant's DNA sequences due to radiation or problems that arise that are not in our control
2. An issue that arises during liver and bile duct development in the womb; may have been exposed to toxic material or radiation.
3. An issue within the immune system; it may attack the bile ducts, liver or other organs for unknown reasons.
4. A viral or bacterial infection that has formed after birth, such as cytomegalovirus, reovirus, or rotavirus

Symptoms of Bilary atresia
The first and most recognizable symptom is jaundice (yellowing of skin and the whites of the eyes). Jaundice occurs when the liver does not remove bilirubin, a protein which is a reddish-yellow substance formed when hemoglobin breaks down. In healthy infants, bilirubin is absorbed, processed by the liver, and then released into the bile. However, blockage of the bile ducts forces bilirubin to build up in the blood which causes a build up of toxins. Bilirubin circulates the blood and can reach to tissue in the brain. It can cause Kernicterus which is a rare type of brain damage.
